Prostate Cancer: Your Treatment Choices
Good News for Men!
6 CHOICES
Our Doctor Did Not Tell Us About All of Them
Looking Back - I
Wasn’t Worried
When my husband, Bill, had a physical exam, his PSA level was 14! A
“normal” PSA is under 5.
I knew
it was high, but Bill had survived serious surgery to remove a growth
from his esophagus. He had spent 9 days in Critical Care Heart Unit.
I was
just so glad to have Bill alive, I DIDN’T WORRY when his blood test
showed this high PSA. But, I should have!
We
were soon to learn that he had Prostate Cancer.
We
Wanted More Information
Our
doctor, an Internist, told Bill that he thought he had Prostate Cancer,
but it was a “slow growing” type and he could do nothing. He said Bill
would probably live his whole life and never suffer any symptoms of
cancer, with no treatment at all.
1. Choice:
Do Nothing
However, he advised Bill to see a Urologist Specialist at a clinic in a
nearby town. We went, and the Urologist recommended a biopsy. The
results revealed multiple Prostate Cancers. He scheduled more tests.
Meanwhile, I sent emails & called praying friends around the country
asking them to keep Bill in their prayers. I know prayer avails much and
nothing is too hard for God. HE is the Great I AM, not the Great I WAS.
But, we
have to act on our faith. God says to: “Ask and you shall receive.”
One
friend called immediately, she was recovering from heart surgery and too
weak to write, but she cared enough to call right away. “Ask your doctor
to start Bill on a prescription that saved my husband’s life,” she said.
“It’s expensive, but it killed the cancer. Take a pill daily, called
Eulexin.”
2.
Prescription: Eulexin
I
asked the urologist. “Eulexin is a hormone, with side effects such as
hot flashes,” He said. “It now requires an injection every 4 months
along with the daily pill.” We started Bill on the prescription and the
injection at the Dr office.
At
the next consultation, the Urologist said he had scheduled Bill for
radiation, to begin in 3 weeks!
I told
the doctor I didn’t want him to have radiation – I had heard too many
horrible stories from friends who had undergone it.
“Mrs.
Scoggan,” he said, “there have been great advances in radiation
treatment from what was available in the past. They can focus on small
areas and pinpoint the spots needing treatment. I think this is the best
for Mr. Scoggan.”
I replied “Well, I would like to have a second opinion.” I braced
myself. Expecting him to get angry and ask if I knew more than he did.
Instead, he sat there and didn’t say anything.
Then,
he looked at me and said “A second opinion is always a good idea. If
you’d like, I can schedule an appointment with a Urologist Specialist at
the Indiana University Medical Center Cancer Pavilion.”
We
said “Yes.” But, it would be three weeks until Bill could get in.
3. Cryosurgery: Freezing
Next,
a friend from Texas called and told us about her father being totally
cancer free for over 5 years, as a result of Cryosurgery. I asked what
that was - I never heard of it.
“Cryo
freezes the prostrate, and kills the cancer,” she told me. Her dad was
sent around the nation to inform doctors of this treatment. “He hasn’t
had any side effects from Cryo,” she said. No sickness, no incontinence,
no pain nor weakness. It sounded great!
“Why
don’t you fly down to Dallas, they have a clinic here that does Cryo?” I
thanked her and started looking for Cryo nearby. No luck.
Looking
for More Choices
Driving to Indianapolis, finding the Cancer Pavilion, we met the young
Urologist Specialist. I asked if he agreed with our doctor’s opinion of
“doing nothing” about Prostate Cancer, at Bill’s age?
“No!”
he said. “This is a very aggressive type of cancer. It moves rapidly out
of the prostate and into the bones. There is little we can do once it
gets in the bones.”
4-6:
Chemo, Remove Prostate, and Cryosurgery
We
don’t want radiation. What other choices do we have,” I asked. “You have
6 choices: Radiation, Chemo, surgical removal hormone therapy,
Cryosurgery and do nothing.”
Bill
and I were so excited to find we could get Cryo care in Indiana. He
scheduled surgery a few days later, and explained Bill would be in the
hospital overnight. He could come home and wouldn’t need any special
help with dressing or bathing.
Bill
would need Depends or a pad for about 10 days, due to bloody discharge
of matter from the freezing of cancer cells. After that, Bill would come
in for a check up in 3-6 month. “Don’t run a marathon for a few weeks,”
he said. ”Then, he should be fine.”
I told
him that Bill had been on Eulexin for just over a month, and the
specialist thought we take him off of it. Should Bill ever have a
recurrence of cancer, we could use it then.
My husband
has NO side effects!
Bill
feels great. *No side effects. *He is NOT incontinent. *No hot flashes.
*No Weakness. *No cancer
has shown
up in any tests.
I just
had to get this information out to help other men. I imagine there are
thousands of men who, like Bill, have not been given news about the 6
choices of treatment. Not just one or two.
It is
too good to keep to myself. It’s a MILLION DOLLAR HEALTH TIP for free.
